SUMMARY:Opening Plenary Session: Who are our students becoming as thinkers and learners as a result of their time with us?
DESCRIPTION:Since the very beginning of the Cultures of Thinking Project at Harvard\, one question has energized our work: Who are our students becoming as thinkers and learners as a result of their time with us?&nbsp\; We’ve long believed that a high-quality education is about far more than short-term retention or success on low-level assessments. It’s about nurturing young people who are curious\, capable\, and ready to engage meaningfully with the world—successful not just in our seats\, but beyond our doors.\n&nbsp\;\nHelping students become independent\, empowered learners requires a shift for all of us—a rethinking of both the teacher’s role and the learner’s role. It also asks us to interrupt the familiar “grammar of school” that too often prizes compliance over agency. In our opening plenary session\, we’ll come together to explore what we are noticing in our learners this year—early signs\, small moments\, and powerful indicators of their growth as independent thinkers. From there\, we’ll get practical by examining the key practices\, mental shifts\, and instructional moves that strengthen students’ learning and thinking muscles and develop both their resilience and independence. &nbsp\;

SUMMARY:Creating a Culture of Thinking for Adults-SESSION FULL
DESCRIPTION:"For classrooms to be cultures of thinking for students\, schools must be cultures of thinking for teachers." -- R. Ritchhart\, 2023\n&nbsp\;How—in the midst of days crowded with urgent matters that require our attention—do we find the time for our own learning as educators? And once we’ve found the time\, how do we use it in a way that helps us learn more\, and more deeply\, about teaching and learning? In this session\, we will practice protocols and processes that support collaborative professional learning\, talk through the misconceptions that often get in the way of effective collaborative learning\, and share ideas about how to address the practical challenges that often emerge when we take steps to make the learning of teachers and administrators a vital part of a school’s culture of thinking.

SUMMARY:Creating Conditions Where Thinking Can Thrive-SESSION FULL
DESCRIPTION:Every school and classroom tells a story of learning--what it feels and looks like\, and how it truly works to foster deep\, lasting understanding. Too often\, external pressures push us toward simply "getting through the work\," which diminishes the rich potential of this story for both students and educators.\nThis deep dive workshop is for everyone—especially those new to Cultures of Thinking\, as well as those seeking a regrounding in its core principles. We will explore the vital question posed by the Cultures of Thinking project: How can we design and nurture learning spaces to become vibrant cultures where thinking is valued\, visible\, and actively developed?\nBuilding a thinking culture is dynamic\, especially since thinking itself is largely invisible. This session will focus on the role we play in creating conditions where thinking can thrive visibly within our learners--offering essential orientation for newcomers and practical refreshers for those with some experience. We will explore how to make sophisticated intellectual processes--such as close looking\, questioning\, uncovering complexity\, and considering perspectives—explicit and commonplace. Join us to connect with the fundamental ideas of the Worldwide Cultures of Thinking Project and leave ready to engage fully in the CoT Summit sessions and craft a more thoughtful\, engaged\, and meaningful story of learning in your own setting.

SUMMARY:Questions Drive Thinking and Learning
DESCRIPTION:Questions are drivers of inquiry\, catalysts for changing our perceptions\, vehicles for developing understanding\, promoters of action\, and opportunities to clarify our thinking . . . and\, a major way that teachers interact with their students. There is evidence showing that teacher questions consume between 10-20% of the time students spend in classrooms. However\, research shows that more than 80% of all teacher questions only require students to recall facts. Is this true in our classrooms? How can we collect data to help us better understand our own questioning and the questions students experience across our schools? How can we better understand what effective questioning looks\, feels\, and sounds like in a cultures of thinking classroom? In addition\, if we recognize that questions are important vehicles for learning\, they shouldn’t totally be the purview of teachers. How can we engage students in asking better questions that increase engagement and deepen learning? Questions are one of the most powerful ways for learners to express their thinking\, enhance problem-solving\, monitor understanding\, and improve as active and autonomous learners. How can we harness the potential of questioning to develop more independent learners?

SUMMARY:Pitfalls & Pathways: Transforming Culture & Sustaining Change in a Culture of Thinking
DESCRIPTION:What does a school truly value? The signs are everywhere—from posters posted throughout the hallways to conversations teachers and leaders find themselves in regularly. Building a Culture of Thinking is the aspiration of many schools\, yet the journey from good intentions to sustained\, deep transformation is fraught with common pitfalls. This plenary session talk draws upon vivid\, real-world stories to examine critical challenges that often undermine genuine cultural change.&nbsp\;We will explore how to move beyond viewing a Culture of Thinking as a program to "do" and instead cultivate it as a fundamental stance—a shift in collective identity.

SUMMARY:Open Space Summit Café: Exploring Your Questions About Cultures of Thinking
DESCRIPTION:One of the reasons we hold this Cultures of Thinking Summit\, rather than a "conference\," is to promote the coming together of the perspectives\, experiences\, curiosities\, and aspirations you all bring. Our Open Space Summit Café is specifically designed to be a place where we engage with one another -- talking about the kinds of topics and questions that will provide moments to consider other viewpoints\, reflect deeply\, and perhaps gain some new insights and inspiration. For this reason\, conversation groups will form around topics that are of most interest to this year's Summit learners. Coming soon\, we'll gather suggested topics you'd like to converse with other participants about\, or questions you'd like to chew on most with others that would be helpful to you in your own efforts to create and deepen a Culture of Thinking.&nbsp\;\n\n

Grounded in the ninth mindset of the Cultures of Thinking in Action framework\, this interactive workshop will explore ways we can create intentional opportunities for ourselves and our students to explore\, understand\, and interrogate AI using Project Zero ideas and a maker mindset. Incorporating AI in our teaching and learning can drive engagement\, fuel empowerment\, and foster deep learning. No experience with AI necessary\, just an open mind! Participants are encouraged to bring a computing device\, if available.&nbsp\;

SUMMARY:Empowering ALL Learners Through a Culture of Thinking-SESSION FULL
DESCRIPTION:Empowering ALL Learners Through a Culture of Thinking focuses on something we are all craving more of in our classrooms: deep\, human-centered dialogue that supports learners in feeling known\, valued\, and seen. Through agreements that shift from a culture of compliance to a culture of engagement\, and documentation of language and learning through a culture of thinking\, we can create the conditions that help learners move from dependence to greater independence&nbsp\;as thinkers\, collaborators\, and contributors.&nbsp\;When we intentionally design with the cultural forces of time\, interactions\, and opportunities in mind\, we can create space for every learner\, especially those who have felt disenfranchised or underestimated\, to show us who they are and what they are capable of.&nbsp\;\n\nIn this session\, we’ll explore simple\, powerful structures you can use right away through what our students actually named “The Dinner Table.” Grounded in a culture of thinking\, this discussion-based approach sparks richer conversations\, supports meaningful collaboration\, increases student ownership\, and nurtures truly independent thinking. You’ll see how these practices elevate student voice\, strengthen community\, and expand what’s possible in our classrooms.\n\n\n

SUMMARY:Exploring the Power of Making Thinking Visible Practices-SESSION FULL
DESCRIPTION:As educators worldwide strive to cultivate classrooms where thinking is valued and visible\, thinking routines have become commonplace in practice. However\, these routines are all too often treated as "activities to complete" rather than tools to foster deep thinking habits. To be truly effective\, thinking routines must be supported by other essential Making Thinking Visible (MTV) practices: active listening\, intentional questioning\, and strategic documentation-- positioning us to be students of our students. In this session\, Mark will lead participants through an immersive experience that highlights these practices\, offering fresh ways to reconsider the power of making thinking visible—both through routines and beyond.\n\n

SUMMARY:Guiding Teacher Inquiry into Their Own Teaching-SESSION FULL
DESCRIPTION:We often use the word “training” when we talk about teacher professional learning. This connotes that there is some skill or practice that we merely want teachers to replicate or add into their practice. However\, developing a culture of thinking goes much deeper than merely adding a set of practices. It requires a deep reflection on and understanding of one’s teaching as we engage in the ongoing practice of refining it. Such an inquiry provides a powerful example of in-depth\, ongoing professional learning. In this session we will look at the Inquiry Cycle we have used to guide teachers around the world in the Cultures of Thinking Project and hear from local teachers about what this type of learning has meant to them.

SUMMARY:Honoring Cultural Strengths through the 8 Cultural Forces Framework
DESCRIPTION:The 8 Cultural Forces serve as a vehicle that communicates what matters in a learning space\, reflecting value systems that connect to the emotional\, ancestral\, and identity-based cultural roots that shape how people learn and make meaning. In this session\, participants will engage in an exploration of how cultural values strengthen learning environments where thinking is valued\, visible\, and meaningful. Through interactive provocations and a thinking routine\, participants will surface the cultural values within their community\, seeing how diverse backgrounds come alive through silent dialogue and shared noticing. Participants will also be guided through a novel way to use the 8 Cultural Forces framework to map their core values into actionable teaching and planning moves. This session grows out of ways the presenters have used Indigenous Hawaiian perspectives to guide their use of the 8 Cultural Forces\, bringing you examples of how this work shows up in professional development sessions and instructional coaching—demonstrating a systematic\, layered way of supporting teachers\, leaders\, and students through a cultural perspective. Whether attending as a teacher\, administrator\, specialist or coach\, participants will leave with a tool they can immediately apply to help cultural values live—visibly and intentionally—across classrooms\, staff rooms\, and entire school communities.

SUMMARY:Less but Better: Leveraging the Cultural Force of Time
DESCRIPTION:Everyone can relate to the feeling of having too much to do and not enough time to do it. But how can we impact this culture of busyness in order to create opportunities for deep learning? This session will explore both the obstacles to and strategies for slowing down and doing less but going deeper by using subtractive thinking. And in doing so\, we’ll consider how this adds value to both living and learning.

SUMMARY:A Journey of Discovery: Project MUSE QUESTS
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a morning of play\, connection\, and curiosity at the beautiful Timken Museum of Art in Balboa Park! From 10:00 to 12:30ish\, we invite you to step away from the traditional conference setting to experience Project MUSE QUESTS. Originally developed by Project Zero researchers several years ago\, these QUESTS are designed to transform how we look at and engage with art. Your small group will select a work of art and embark on a collaborative "QUEST" using specialized booklets representing a variety of entry points--each page featuring a single\, thought-provoking question. By taking turns posing questions and sharing perspectives\, you’ll engage in a rich dialogue that emphasizes close looking\, uncovering complexity\, and wondering.&nbsp\;\nIn this experience\, the journey is just as important as the destination\; it’s not about finding a single "right" answer\, but about the joy of thinking together. This session is purely for your own replenishment and the pleasure of shared learning. The Timken Museum of Art offers free admission\, and you are welcome to wrap up whenever you like to go enjoy the rest of your weekend. We would love to have you join us for this mindful and inspiring exploration!\n\n

SUMMARY:Observing & Pondering & Reflecting—In Nature! - SESSION FULL
DESCRIPTION:Step away from the conference setting and onto the trails of the San Elijo Lagoon. After days of deep learning at the CoT Summit\, join a community of outdoor-minded educators to synthesize your ideas with some fresh air and rich dialogue. Admire the majestic beauty of the North County San Diego Coastline! Saunter through a slot canyon and scamper up a ladder to an epic viewpoint! Pause to observe osprey and great blue heron and sandpipers! One of the most powerful ways to provoke deep thinking is to get outdoors\, taking in a few deep breaths as you soak in the beauty of San Diego\, observing and pondering and reflecting\, while walking and talking. We will meet at San Elijo Lagoon and Nature Preserve to gear up\, set the stage for the excursion\, talk about the importance of outdoor education\, and engage in the a few Thinking Routines that will provoke reflective thought and spark ideas to share with fellow deep-thinking hikers. Then we will set out to conquer what is known as Annie’s Slot Canyon\, stopping along the way to point out San Diego flora and fauna. The goal will be to connect with outdoor-learning-minded educators\, reflect and dialogue as it relates to creating cultures of thinking and making thinking visible\, and just enjoy each other's company on the trail!&nbsp\;\n\nNote that there are many entrances to the Trail. Here's a map with the exact point marked with a red pin.

SUMMARY:Expanding Our Approach to and Understanding of Folk Art
DESCRIPTION:Folk art is unique in that it seeks to elevate our understanding of common objects that define a culture. By displaying and platforming these objects\, the Mingei International Museum invites us to consider them as art\, and thereby ask of them the same things we ask of masterworks: What is the artist's intent? What is the artist trying to communicate? Why did the artist make particular choices in the act of creating? For an object with utility\, we tend to overlook these questions and reduce our answers to bare usefulness: A George Nakashima chair is only a seat\, for example. A shift in perspective can offer insights often overlooked by the casual viewer. In this session\, we will explore folk art in the Mingei's collection using thinking routines that will aim to expand our perspective\, adjust our focus\, and have us consider objects with a critical eye and an examination of intent we grant other works of art. Finally\, we will discuss how we can take this means of analysis back to the classroom and apply it to class projects and lesson plans.&nbsp\;

SUMMARY:Sparking Questions
DESCRIPTION:Museums are powerful places to ignite curiosity—especially when we slow down\, look closely\, talk with others\, and let questions lead the way. This approach becomes even more valuable when we encounter works that don’t immediately draw us in\, feel unfamiliar\, or seem hard to access at first glance. In this session\, participants will use the thinking routine&nbsp\;Looking: Ten Times Two&nbsp\;and then combine it with the&nbsp\;Question Formulation Technique\, or QFT (developed by the Right Question Institute)\, to generate questions about the artwork. Along the way\, you’ll learn the QFT process\, experience how it fuels engagement\, and see how looking closely supports questioning and the construction of understanding. You’ll engage in the process with two works of art at the Museum of Contemporary Art in San Diego-La Jolla: one that your group finds instantly compelling\, and another that feels more distant or challenging. By comparing these experiences\, we’ll surface insights from our own learning—insights we can then translate directly into strategies for sparking curiosity\, especially when students don’t feel curious yet.

SUMMARY:Under the Freeway\, We Rise: Mapping Routes from Art to Justice
DESCRIPTION:Built beneath a freeway meant to erase a community\, Chicano Park stands as a living archive of resistance\, identity\, and collective power. In this session\, participants will move through the park by choosing intentional routes that foreground different justice themes—resistance\, cultural pride\, solidarity\, and intergenerational memory. Using visible thinking routines\, participants will closely engage with murals as acts of public storytelling that document struggle\, affirm community identity\, and call people to action. This experience invites participants to slow down\, listen deeply to the stories embedded in the art\, and return to reflect on how public art can inspire social justice action in their own communities.
